Classification by rate
In order to meet the requirements of various transmission rates, optical modules with different rates are produced: 100GE optical module, 40GE optical module, 25GE optical module, 10GE optical module, GE optical module, FE optical module.
Classification by package
The higher the transmission rate, the more complex the structure of the optical module. In order to meet the needs of different structures, various types of optical modules have been produced. The package types are: CFP package, QSFP+package, QSFP28 package, XFP package, SFP package, eSFP package, SFP+package. All optical modules support hot plug.
SFP (Small Form factor Pluggable) optical module: small pluggable package. The SFP optical module supports LC optical connectors.
ESFP (Enhanced Small Form factor Pluggable) optical module: Enhanced SFP, sometimes called SFP. It refers to the SFP with voltage, temperature, bias current, transmitted optical power and received optical power monitoring functions.
SFP+(Small Form factor Pluggable Plus) optical module: refers to the SFP module with rate increase.
XFP (10GB Small Form factor Pluggable) optical module: "X" is the abbreviation of the Roman numeral 10. All XFP modules are 10GE optical modules. XFP optical module supports LC optical fiber connector. Compared with SFP+optical modules, XFP optical modules are wider and longer in size.
SFP28 (Small Form factor Pluggable 28) optical module: The interface package size is the same as that of SFP+, and it supports the SFP28 optical module with a speed of 25G.
QSFP+(Quad Small Form factor Pluggable) optical module: four channel small hot pluggable optical module. QSFP+optical module supports MPO optical connector, which is larger than SFP+optical module.
CFP (Centum Form factor Pluggable) optical module: the dimension of length × width × height is defined as 144.75mm × 82mm × 13.6mm, which is a new optical module standard that can be hot plugged at high speed to support data communication and telecommunications transmission applications.
QSFP28 optical module: the interface package size is the same as QSFP+, and supports QSFP28 optical module with 100GE speed and QSFP+optical module with 40GE speed.
Classification according to physical layer standard
In order to meet the requirement that data can be transmitted in different forms, various physical layer standards have been defined, and optical modules supporting various standards have been generated. For details, please refer to "Standards" in specific optical modules.
Classification by mode
The optical fiber is divided into single-mode optical fiber and multimode optical fiber. In order to use different types of optical fibers, single-mode optical modules and multi-mode optical modules are produced.
Single mode optical module is used together with single mode optical fiber. Single mode optical fiber transmission frequency bandwidth, large transmission capacity, suitable for long-distance transmission.
The multimode optical module is used together with multimode fiber. Multimode fiber has modal dispersion defect, its transmission performance is worse than single-mode fiber, but its cost is low, and it is suitable for small capacity and short distance transmission
